Iraq calls on US energy companies to accelerate projects

The finance minister’s appeal follows bilateral economic talks, but the report names no new packages or delivery deadlines.

Iraq’s finance minister has called on US companies working in oil and energy to accelerate their projects, Iraqi News reported on 21 September. The appeal came during talks in Baghdad with the US chargé d’affaires on economic and financial cooperation, following an Iraqi delegation’s July visit to Washington.

The report describes a broad package of agreements from that visit but does not identify the projects covered by the latest request or give implementation deadlines.

Analysis: The immediate message is a government push to translate bilateral engagement into delivery. For engineering firms and equipment suppliers, the next useful evidence would be named projects, funded work packages and procurement schedules. The minister’s appeal alone does not establish that contracts are available or that construction has accelerated. The report offers no comparable evidence of an immediate change for businesses outside the projects concerned.
