Iraq signs data-centre memorandum with Huawei at ITEX

The reported framework covers local hosting, computing infrastructure and technical training; project costs and sites were not disclosed.

Iraq’s General Company for Communications and Informatics signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei at the ITEX exhibition in Baghdad, NEWS.IQ reported on 3 October. The framework concerns data centres and cloud infrastructure for public institutions and businesses.

The stated objectives include hosting data within Iraq, improving networks and providing technical training. Separately, the report quoted the Communications and Media Commission’s executive director describing efforts to simplify licensing and attract technology investment.

No project value, locations, capacity or construction timetable were disclosed. The memorandum establishes a cooperation framework; it does not demonstrate that financing has closed or construction has begun.

The Iraqi counterpart matters: the General Company for Communications and Informatics is the party named in the memorandum, while the Communications and Media Commission is discussed separately as the regulator. The two roles should not be conflated when following licensing decisions or later project commitments.
