Green Taxi roadmap puts private capital behind Iraq’s million-EV target

Reported plans begin with Baghdad pilots and assessment of transport depots for solar-powered charging.

Iraq’s proposed Green Taxi programme assigns private investors the financing and operation of electric fleets, alongside vehicle supply, maintenance and solar-powered charging. Iraqi News reported the model on 6 October, citing remarks to INA by Environment Ministry carbon-economics official Haidar Qasim Al-Darraji.

The reported national target is one million electric vehicles through successive phases, beginning with pilots in Baghdad. Environment and Transport Ministry bodies, including the General Company for Private Transport Management, are assessing existing garages and depots as charging locations.

Under the proposed division of responsibilities, government would establish technical and regulatory requirements and carbon-accounting foundations, while companies would provide capital and operate the services. The report gives no committed financing amount, pilot fleet size, procurement notice or completion date for the national target.
