Kuwait Fund backs study of further Gulf grid links

The grant funds a regional feasibility study. The reported agreement does not name Iraq as a route or commit funds for a new Iraqi connection.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development agreed a grant of 200,000 Kuwaiti dinars, approximately $646,000, to the GCC Interconnection Authority for a feasibility study of links between the Gulf electricity network and neighbouring countries, Zawya Projects reported on 7 September. The study is intended to examine electricity needs, technical and economic options, likely phases, costs, implementation arrangements and environmental and social effects.

The reported Kuwait Fund statement did not identify the countries or routes under consideration. The same report notes earlier Kuwait Fund loans supporting an expansion of the GCC network and a connection toward southern Iraq. That existing Iraq link makes the study relevant to the country, but it does not establish that an additional Iraqi route is included in this new study.

This is funding for analysis, not a construction award or evidence of additional electricity flowing into Iraq. A named route, completed feasibility work and a separate investment decision would be the next milestones to check. No substantive assessment of capacity, delivery dates or commercial terms is possible from the reported grant alone.
