Fuad Hussein sets out June 2027 target for armed-group disarmament

The foreign minister describes talks with seven groups; Kataib Hezbollah disputes an understanding with the prime minister.

Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Iraq aimed to bring armed groups’ weapons under state control by 30 June 2027, in remarks at the Iraqi embassy in Washington on 1 October reported by The National.

He described negotiations with seven groups and said several supported the plan, with some weapons already handed over. Those statements are the minister’s account of progress; the report does not independently verify the handovers.

The National also reported that Kataib Hezbollah denied reaching an understanding with Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi on disarmament earlier that day. Hussein’s stated objective combines disarmament with incorporation into Iraq’s armed forces, but the competing accounts leave the breadth of agreement unresolved.
